The Process
The design approach for this project needed to be fun and engaging, the goal was to create a branding identity that was unique, and one that would be at home as a sticker in a grungy bars across Melbourne.
Creative Chaos
There are any number of approaches to the creative direction stage of branding, in this instance, what was required was a collaboration first approach. The client wasn’t sure what they needed out of this project, so it was essential to walk them through it and create alongside them so they could be a part of the process from the beginning.
The result of this approach was, quite simply, fun. Designing alongside the client in this instance allowed our creativity to come together and produce some very unique (and sometimes outlandish) ideas.
Concept Development
The structure of this project was fairly informal, with close engagement with the client, and regular checkins as concepts progressed.
This non-linear concept development yielded some surprising outcomes, but we continued to fall back on the cartoon mascot concept.
As we explored this concept further, a few things became obvious. The headphones are a key focal point, and tie the concept back to audio, and the pose and joy of the character is what will set it apart and catch the eye.
So, moving on from concepts to refinement these became a focus of development.
Outcome
By engaging in a collaborative process with my client, I was able to build a character and logo with all the personality they required.
Part of the requirements for the design was to be versatile in many different applications, merchandise, stickers, social, posters and more. In order to achieve this, the character has been designed to work independently to the logo, as a mascot.
Part of this project was also the creative direction for social media advertising and content creation, these portions are currently ongoing.
